When setting up a business phone system, one of the first decisions is what kind of phone number to use. Montana businesses have three main options: local numbers, toll-free numbers, and vanity numbers. Each serves a different purpose, and the right choice depends on your business type and customer base.

    Local Numbers (406)

What it is: A standard phone number with a Montana area code (406). Best for: Businesses that serve a specific Montana community and want to appear local and accessible. A plumber in Missoula, a dentist in Helena, a restaurant in Kalispell. Why it matters: Studies show that people are 4x more likely to answer a call from a local area code. For Montana businesses, a 406 number signals "we're local, we're here, we're one of you."

    Toll-Free Numbers (800, 888, etc.)

What it is: A number with an 800, 888, 877, or 866 prefix that's free for callers to dial. Best for: Businesses that serve customers nationwide or want to project a larger, more established image. E-commerce companies, SaaS businesses, or Montana companies with out-of-state clients. Consideration: Toll-free numbers can feel impersonal for local businesses. A Montana homeowner calling a roofing company may be more comfortable dialing a 406 number than an 800 number.

    Vanity Numbers

What it is: A number that spells a word or phrase, like 1-800-FLOWERS or 406-CALL-BST. Best for: Businesses that advertise heavily on radio, billboards, or TV where memorability matters. Consideration: Vanity numbers are harder to get (popular words are taken) and younger customers who tap-to-call from their phone don't need to memorize numbers. They're most valuable for traditional advertising channels.

    Can You Have Multiple Types?

Absolutely. Many Montana businesses use a local 406 number as their primary line and add a toll-free number for their website and marketing. With VoIP, both numbers ring the same phones — no separate systems needed. You can even have local numbers in multiple Montana cities (Missoula, Helena, Kalispell) all routing to the same team.

    Our Recommendation

For most Montana small businesses (1-50 employees) serving local or regional customers: start with a local 406 number. It builds trust, signals local presence, and is the most recognizable format for Montana callers. Add toll-free later if you expand beyond state lines.
